ALERT FROM OLD CARTOON: "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home," Episode 48

Post by Zorro »

This was a Hanna-Barbera prime time animated sitcom from 1972-1974, airing 48 episodes across 3 seasons. It was the second prime-time animated sitcom H-B produced after "The Flintstones" and the the last on network TV until "The Simpsons." It stars a "typical" Californian middle-class family.

Anyway, in the series finale, episode 48, "CAR 54," there is a very brief blink-and-miss DID scene. The plot involves two cops (one of whom is the brother in law of the wife, Irma Boyle, voiced by Joan Gerber) trying to moonlight as babysitters for extra money. As the title suggests, it was a reference to another sitcom, "Car 54; Where Are You?" starring Joe E. Ross (who has a cameo voice in the episode). At one point the cops are babysitting a bratty kid dressed as a cowboy who likes tying people up.

Around the middle of the episode, they and the kid at at the Boyle residence and the kid ties up and gags Irma Boyle, hands at her sides, legs together, and a slight cleave gag). There's no mumbling and it really is the definition of a blink-and-miss; the scene lasts all of 5 seconds at best. Unfortunately, the bald overweight husband Harry Boyle gets a slightly longer scene (no gag) a few minutes earlier. But I was watching the show on a local digital channel for old cartoons and I was actually shocked there was a scene at all, and I'd never seen anyone upload it, so here's the tip.

The show was released on blu-ray in January and since it's owned by WB, maybe it is on streaming somewhere. The show itself is a snapshot of the early 1970s like many sitcoms were. But, like I said, anyone who is looking for a brief DID scene with a middle aged housewife with a cleave gag from 1970s TV animation, it's something to clip for the completist who's seen everything. Like I said, I was surprised to see it.
